Staten Island
Location & History
Staten Island sits in the southwestern corner of New York City, bordered by New Jersey and surrounded by New York Harbor, the Arthur Kill, and the Atlantic. Known as the “borough of parks,” it offers a quieter, more suburban feel compared to the rest of the city. Historically called Richmond, the area developed as a mix of waterfront communities, shipping, and residential neighborhoods. Staten Island became part of New York City in 1898 and has continued to grow while keeping a strong local identity shaped by its coastal geography and small-town atmosphere.
