1609: Explorer Henry Hudson discovered the river that would later bear his name.
1624: The Dutch founded the settlement of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island.
1664: The English took over the city and renamed it New York, in honor of the Duke of York.
18th–19th centuries: New York became a major port and immigration hub. Millions of immigrants arrived through Ellis Island.
1898: A key moment — the official consolidation of five boroughs into one unified city: New York City as we know it today.

Before 1898, each borough was a separate city or county. Due to rapid population growth and economic expansion, a decision was made to unite them into one metropolis to simplify governance.
Manhattan- Manhattan – The historical and financial heart of the city, and the site of the original settlement.
Brooklyn – Formerly an independent city, it once rivaled Manhattan in size and influence.
Queens – Once a rural and industrial area, it rapidly grew into one of the most multicultural boroughs.
The Bronx – Originally part of Westchester County, later incorporated into NYC.
Staten Island – Resisted consolidation for years and even voted for secession later, but remained part of NYC.

Wall Street is the global financial center, home to the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.
